Proper substrate preparation is vital for tile installation. Cement subfloors permit direct application of mortar to facilitate tile laying. Conversely, wood subfloors necessitate using a cement backer unit (CBU). It’s crucial to recognize that substrate materials can sometimes move, which can cause tile cracking, chipping, or rising. Precision is paramount and advanced technologies, such as lasers, are used to guarantee precise measurements. As we work, we determine which pieces necessitate cutting to fit the required areas. The marked tiles are then expertly cut with a wet saw fitted with a diamond blade. The next stage involves applying the thinset mortar, which is a cement-based adhesive and using a trowel to spread it evenly across the surface. Tiles are firmly placed into the thinset for installation. It’s worth noting that the subfloor’s imperfections may require adjusting the amount of mortar applied to create a level plane. 

The width of the grout joints may vary depending on the type of tile being used. To maintain consistent spacing, wedges or spacers can be utilized, and the back of the stone tile may be coated with thinset mortar for added bonding strength. Once the stone tiles have been set and the thinset mortar has fully cured, the grout joints are then filled with sanded or un-sanded grout, determined based on the tile, grout joint, and width. The joints are filled by applying a mixture, which is then smoothed out with a sponge to remove excess grout from the tile surface.
