Cedar — OTHS's Primary Fence Material
Cedar is the fence material we install most often for Salem and Albany area homeowners. The reason is straightforward: cedar handles Pacific Northwest moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and seasonal humidity better than most alternatives in its price range, and it ages into a natural silver-gray that fits the regional aesthetic.
A standard cedar fence install lasts well into the 15-20 year range with reasonable maintenance — and the maintenance work itself (periodic staining or sealing) is something we can include as part of the original installation or schedule separately later. Cedar's grain absorbs stain evenly, which means your fence keeps a clean appearance long after install. Western red cedar is what we typically source, sized appropriately for the panel design and local height-restriction codes.
Other Materials We Install
Cedar isn't the only option. Depending on your property, budget, and use case, we also install:
- Pressure-treated pine — lower upfront cost than cedar, common for utility fencing or longer perimeter runs where cedar economics don't pencil. Lifespan 10-15 years with treatment.
- Vinyl — virtually maintenance-free, good for homeowners who don't want recurring stain work. Higher upfront cost; 20-30 year practical lifespan.
- Chain-link — practical for larger lots, dog runs, garden enclosures, and properties prioritizing function over aesthetic.
For most residential front-yard, side-yard, and decorative-perimeter applications, cedar wins on the balance of cost, appearance, and PNW durability. For specific use cases — large rural lots, commercial properties, or pet enclosures — the other materials are often the better fit.
