Exterior Painting Guide for Oregon

Oregon's wet climate demands careful paint selection and timing. Learn how to prep, paint, and protect exterior surfaces.

Oregon's Painting Window

Exterior paint needs dry conditions to cure properly. In Oregon, that window is May through September, with June–August being ideal. Painting in the fall or winter in Oregon means the paint won't cure before the rains set in — leading to peeling, bubbling, and early failure.

Surface Preparation Is Everything

In Oregon's moisture-rich environment, proper surface prep is even more critical than paint quality. A well-prepped surface with average paint will outlast a poorly-prepped surface with premium paint every time.

  • Clean first: House wash or pressure wash (appropriate to the material) before painting. Dirt, moss, and mildew under paint cause adhesion failure.
  • Sand and scrape: Remove all loose or peeling paint. Sand glossy surfaces for better adhesion.
  • Repair damage: Fill cracks, fix rot spots, and replace damaged boards before painting.
  • Prime: Bare wood and repaired areas need primer. Use a mildew-resistant primer in Oregon.

Best Paint Types for Oregon Exteriors

100% Acrylic Latex

The gold standard for Oregon exteriors. Flexible, moisture-resistant, and holds up well in wet conditions. Available in satin and semi-gloss finishes. This is what we recommend for all Oregon siding and trim.

Elastomeric Coatings

For stucco and concrete surfaces. These coatings stretch with the surface movement and seal micro-cracks against moisture infiltration.

Oil-Based Paints

Generally not recommended for Oregon exteriors. Oil-based paints become brittle in moisture and tend to peel in wet climates. The exception is certain trim and door applications where hard finish is desired.

Mildew Resistance Is Non-Negotiable

In Oregon, choose exterior paints with built-in mildew resistance. Mildew-resistant additives don't kill existing mildew (you must clean the surface first), but they inhibit future growth on the paint film. Every major paint manufacturer offers mildew-resistant formulations — use them.

Expected Lifespan

A properly prepared and painted Oregon exterior should last 7–12 years before needing a repaint. Factors that shorten this: improper prep, painting in wet conditions, using paint without mildew resistance, or heavy shade/moisture exposure.
